Midnight's Children by Salman RushdieMy rating: 4 of 5 stars
I was surprised at how much I ended up liking this book. For the first hundred pages I was really not enjoying it, it felt like a jumbled mess that wasn't sure what it wanted to be. Little by little though I started to get sucked into the story and it got really good. I think part if the problem is that for the first hundred pages it jumps back and forth from the present to the past and you're not quite sure what to make of it. After a while though it becomes more linear and you're able to get a sense of the somewhat odd prose (which is really quite good after getting used to it). By the time I got halfway through the book I was completely engrossed and didn't want to put it down.
I not even going to try and summarize the story because there's just so much to it but it basically deals with the Indian nation and her people. This book would definitely fit in the mystical realism genre, in fact I would say this book could pretty much define the genre.
Overall this was a great book and I would definitely say that it's earned its reputation. Highly recommend.
